Campaign to clamp down on delinquent road users launched
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) and the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators say they have launched an aggressive campaign to clampdown on motor cyclists who continue to flout the law.
“Over the next few days we are on the lookout for motor cyclists who travel without their helmets and for motorists who continue to drive without seat belts,” said Edgerton Newman, head of to TODSS.
Newman said the move is being carried out as part of the safety awareness campaign launched last Thursday.
The awareness campaign was launched in St Catherine under the theme “Let’s get it right this time”.
With the high number of fatalities now just over 300 since the start of the year, the objectives of the campaign are to increase the awareness of the motoring and commuting public on the importance of road safety and safe travel, to promote healthy life style and the establishment of the St Catherine road safety advisory team, Newman explained.
The event was officially declared open by Spanish Town Mayor Norman Scott.
Some 16 major events are expected to be held across the parish over the next 21 days. The campaign will then move to Kingston and St Andrew between November 29 and January 4th 2016.
Organisers explained that the overall goal is to reduce the alarming increase in road fatalities.
