Church leaders rally for anti-sodomy law
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Several church pastors in Jamaica are leading a Sunday revival meeting aimed at countering what they say is a growing mainstream acceptance of homosexuality.
More than 1,000 people in their Sunday best gathered at the National Heroes Park in Kingston for a spirited religious service that comes a couple of days before a rare court challenge to Jamaica’s anti-sodomy laws.
A colonial-era “buggery law” prohibits anal sex, outlawing consenting sexual relationships between men. The punishment is 10 years in prison.
Some in the crowd carried placards saying marriage should only be between a man and a woman and others held signs saying “Keep the buggery law!”
