Falmouth Cruise Ship Complex to receive thermal sensing unit for Ebola preparedness
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Minister of Health says that a walk-through thermal sensing unit is to be purchased for the Falmouth Cruise Ship Complex in Trelawny as part of the Government’s Ebola Preparedness and Response Activities.
According to Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson a J$7 million donation from Supreme Ventures Limited will go towards the purchase of the unit, installation and training as well as the provision of 25 hand-held thermal sensors and Ebola Kits. The official hand over took place at Jamaica House Monday morning.
Dr Ferguson said that the Ministry of Health has been working with various partners and stakeholders to put mechanisms and systems in place towards an effective response to Ebola.
“A part of this preparation means putting systems in place at our points of entry to heighten our surveillance. This contribution from Supreme Ventures Ltd, will go a far way in terms of the preparedness effort. With the current Ebola outbreak which has seen cases rising to over 10,000 and close to 5,000 deaths and with new cases showing up in the United States and Spain, Jamaica’s response especially at the points of entry must be heightened,” he said.
Last week life insurance giant Sagicor donated funds to purchase a walk-through thermal sensing unit for the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.
