INDECOM probing fatal shooting in Westmoreland
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of a civilian in Whithorn, Westmoreland. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 pm on March 7, this year.
The deceased has been identified as Kevin Black of Waterworks, Deans Valley, in the parish.
According to INDECOM, the report received from the police is that four officers assigned to the Savanna-la-Mar Police Station and Motorized Patrol were on patrol in an unmarked service vehicle.
The officers, it was reported, were acting on information which took them to the Whithorn area in search of an escapee and other men who were armed.
A confrontation allegedly occurred in the vicinity of a wooden shop from which three men exited and fired at the police. The cops reportedly returned the fire hitting one man. The other two men allegedly escaped. The injured man was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Since then an INDECOM team has processed the scene, the body of the deceased and continue to make enquiries.
