JLP to hold press conference on prison transfer agreement
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) will today host a press conference on the prison transfer agreement.
This press conference is scheduled to begin at 2:00pm at the Liguanea Club in Kingston.
Opposition Leader Andrew Holness along with other members of the Opposition including Derrick Smith, Edmund Bartlett and Delroy Chuck are expected to make presentations at the conference.
Minister of National Security Peter Bunting yesterday said the Government will only sign the Prisoner Transfer Agreement with the United Kingdom (UK), after adequate public education and debate, and the enactment of new legislation in the Jamaican Parliament.
“In fact, we will start this process with the establishment of a Special Select Committee that will receive written and oral submissions on this issue by technical experts and all interested parties, including civil society and the Diaspora,” he said.
However, Opposition members of Parliament walked out of Parliament after the Government refused to give a commitment not to proceed with the proposed new prison deal with the UK Government.
Bunting had refused a request from Leader of Opposition, Andrew Holness, to give the House a commitment not to go through with the deal.
He said the Opposition leader seemed to be “disillusioned by his brief term” as prime minister and rejected the request.
