KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) has embarked on a public education campaign aimed at encouraging citizens to use less energy during the Christmas holidays.

“Christmas is usually a high usage period for electricity. People are just burning more energy with the various events and activities associated with the holiday season, so at PCJ, we thought it was very important to get out there early with the energy conservation messages,” said manager, Information and Corporate Affairs, Camille Taylor, in an interview with JIS News.

She is urging citizens to use fewer lights in displays at their homes, stores and offices.

“Limit your lights. You can use reflector materials (for decorations), like tinsel in order to reflect more light and if you are using light, just burn them for about five hours per day. Don’t leave them on all night and if you are leaving the house or closing up the shop, turn them off,” she advised.

Taylor said it is also important to conserve energy whilst cooking. For example, she said that people can check on dishes through the oven window rather than opening the door all the time.

Additionally, she said that several items could be placed in the oven for baking while the microwave and toaster oven could be used for smaller meals.

“That way you can get a lot done and burn less energy,” she added.

The Information and Corporate Affairs manager is reminding people travelling during the holidays to unplug their electrical appliances before they leave home.

“When you leave your appliances plugged in they actually burn energy, even though you are not using them. Plug out your cable box, your Internet modem, your television, fans, radios, microwave, any appliances that aren’t absolutely necessary while you are away,” she said.

Taylor is also advising persons to look for energy efficient electronics when purchasing gifts or upgrading their personal equipment, such as computer, stereo system or refrigerator. 

“Energy efficient electronics use less energy and are better for the environment. You can look out for the energy star label and ask for them in stores if you are not sure. Oversized electronics means more energy, so look for something that suits your needs and meets your budget,” she said.

Established in 1979, the PCJ is the Government entity mandated to manage the country’s energy needs in a manner that supports the overall strategy for national development.
