Novelist Anthony Winkler has died
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaican-born novelist Anthony Winkler has died.
He reportedly passed away on Friday, September 18.
The Jamaica Film Commission yesterday said it regrets his passing, while also expressing condolences to his family and close friends.
“Winkler was probably best known for his 1987 novel, The Lunatic, which earned him a spot on the best seller list and was later on screen as an Island Pictures Film,” a statement from the commission said Saturday.
According to the commission, Winkler was also listed as one of the screenwriters for Cool Runnings in 1993.
“Winkler has among his popular works, nine novels, three non-fiction publications and a host of textbook contributions,” the statement read. “In addition to The Lunatic and Cool Runnings, he also was a screenwriter for the Annihilation of Fish (1999).”
Among the events and places his work was celebrated was the Calabash Literary Festival, Jamaica. The commission said his work drew varied emotions of which laughter was the most popular.
“He will be greatly missed by the literary community,” the statement continued. “May his soul rest in peace.”
