Portland police march against domestic violence
PORT ANTONIO, Jamaica — Portland police are today marching in the streets of the parish capital to “say no to domestic violence”.
According to the police, the march is being held under the police ‘Love Me to Live, Don’t Love Me to Death’ theme.
Officers from various branches across the parish, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the police victim support unit, and the Port Antonio marching band, and residents are currently marching through the capital as part of measures to address domestic violence in Jamaica.
The police will also be holding a public meeting with residents in the town square shortly, where a concert will be staged by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) band and other performers.
The Portland march follows a similar event in St Thomas on Saturday. The JCF says it will be holding similar events in other parishes as part of the celebration of their 150th anniversary.
The US embassy supported the march on Twitter, tweeting in response to photos of the event: “@USEmbassyja stands w/ JA as we move beyond the hashtag to actions that put end to violence against women & girls #LoveMeToLive #HeForSheJA”
