Shanique Myrie CCJ finger-rape case starts Downtown
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A panel of seven judges from the Caribbean Court of Justice this morning kicked off the hearing involving a claim by Jamaican Shanique Myrie against the Barbados government.
Myrie is seeking damages for being subjected to “discriminatory and demeaning treatment by Barbadian officials” during a visit to the island in March 2011.
She contended that she was subjected to two humiliating cavity searches and locked in a dark room by immigration officials at the Grantley Adams airport when she attempted to enter Barbados.
The sitting is being held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston. It is expected that evidence will be heard by a number of Jamaican witnesses over four days. The court has just adjourned and will reconvene at 11:00 am today.
This is the first time that the CCJ is convening in Jamaica.
