Smoke at NMIA forces evacuation
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The departure lounge at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston was on Friday evacuated after smoke got into the exhaust system.
Senior director commercial development and planning at the NMIA, Alfred McDonald, told OBSERVER ONLINE a short a while ago, that the smoke emission is as a result of welding work being done by contracted workers.
McDonald: “We had some contracted workers doing welding on the airport and smoke got into the exhaust system, so that is what’s happening.”
He added that there were some concerns about smoke inhalation and the departure lounge and the ticketing section were evacuated.
“We are re-routing people to ensure that flights go off,” McDonald said.
Smoke can still be seen at the airport.
