Two policemen shot, injured
TWO policemen were shot and injured in West Kingston yesterday in gunfire from two men, one of whom the police say held a baby in his hand as he fired at the cops.
The presence of the child caused the police to hold their own fire during the incident on Third Street in Trench Town.
The names of the injured policemen, a sergeant and constable, were withheld, but the Constabulary Communication Network said they were treated in hospital and released.
According to the police, the two policemen were on mobile patrol along Collie Smith Drive when they noticed a white Toyota Corolla, with the registration plate 9189 DR, travelling on the wrong side of the dual carriageway heading towards the police car.
The policemen, CCN reported, became suspicious when the Corolla made a sudden turn onto Third Street, causing the patrolmen to give chase.
The Corolla eventually crashed into a wall at the intersection of First and West streets and two men allegedly came out of the vehicle firing at the chasing cops.
The police said that they returned the fire, but noticed that one of the men was holding a child. They held their fire.
However, CCN said the gunmen continued to fire, hitting the policemen and damaging the windscreen of the patrol car before escaping on foot in the area.
The Kingston West police who are investigating say they are following leads which could assist them in making an arrest.
