WESTERN BUREAU — A brawl at a football match at Mount Peto, Hanover on Sunday left a good Samaritan dead and two men admitted to hospital with machete wounds. One of the injured men is facing murder and wounding charges.

Dead is 42 year-old taxi operator, Brian Haughton of Copse, Hanover while in police custody is Carlington Hylton, 24, unemployed of Burnt Ground in the parish.

According to Sergeant Dowton Martin, the police’s information officer for the parish, at about 4:40 pm an argument developed between Courtney Huxstable and Neville Duhaney, who were spectators at a football match.

The two, Martin said, have had a long-standing dispute over a woman and old wounds were reopened during the match.

As the quarrel between the two intensified, the lawman said, Haughton — who was close to the commotion — intervened and separated the two men. But he was fatally chopped by Huxstable’s friend, Carlington Hylton, who was actually aiming for Duhaney.

“Shortly afterwards, Hylton used a machete to chop at Duhaney. Duhaney ducked and the machete caught Haughton, who had just parted the men, in the chest,” Sergeant Martin said.

Sergeant Martin said Duhaney then fled the scene but he was chased and held by Hylton, who inflicted machete wounds to his back and right arm.

Hylton was later set upon by citizens who chopped him all over his body, Martin said.

He was taken to the Savanna-la-mar Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition, while Haughton and Duhaney were taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay. Haughton was pronounced dead and Duhaney admitted in stable condition.

Arising out of the incident, Hylton was arrested and charged with murder and wounding with intent, and is now under police guard in hospital.

Haughton’s death has pushed to six the number of homicides committed in the parish since the start of the year.

Last year the parish accounted for nine of the murders committed in the island.
