August trial for footballer
WESTERN BUREAU — Fabian Blake, a former Under-20 national footballer, is to stand trial for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act on August 20.
When he reappeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court earlier this week, Blake, 21, had his $90,000 bail extended until his next court appearance.
The Westmoreland man, who rose to football fame while at the parish’s Frome Technical High School, was allegedly caught with an estimated five pounds of ganja inside his suitcase at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay on May 17.
He was on his way to Barbados at the time.
He was reportedly stopped while passing the security checkpoint where a search of his suitcase revealed the contraband.
Blake was subsequently slapped with charges of possession of, dealing in and attempting to export the illegal substance.
However, while being transported to the Airport police station, he pointed to another man, Brenton Reid, and identified him as the man who had given him the suitcase.
Reid was then arrested and charged with breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act. He has since pleaded guilty to the charges, sentenced to two months behind bars and fined $48,000 for possession of, dealing in and attempting to export the drug.
