Cops fire shots to disperse angry John’s Hall crowd
JOHN’S HALL, St James – The Montego Bay police yesterday prepared summons to serve to five John’s Hall residents in connection with breaches of the Anti Litter Act, following a massive demonstration in that community.
The police said they had to fire “shots in the air” to disperse the angry crowd.
The police are asking the five men, known only by aliases to report to the Montego Bay CIB office at the Freeport Police Station. They are are: “Chile”, “Mickey”, “Myers”, “Nanny” and “Collymore”.
According to police reports between 8:00 am to 10:00 am yesterday, police went into the John’s Hall community in search of three men for their alleged involvement in the sale of ammunition. The police subsequently held the three men, whose names were withheld. During the raid, the police said they found four rounds of 9-mm cartridges.
The police said that after they detained the three men, angry residents pelted members of the police team with stones and blocked the road.
But the residents disputed the police’s claim. The brother of one of the men detained by the police, told the Observer that he panicked after the police allegedly took his brother “behind a house”.
The man, who did not wish to be named, said he asked the police: “Whey oonu a go wid me brother round the house back for?”
“Fe put something pon him and then shoot him kill him?”
He said his outburst caused several of his alarmed neighbours to gather at the scene, and as news spread, other members from the community gathererd.
Up to late last night the three men held during the raid were still in the custody of the Montego Bay police but were not charged as police investigations continued.
