T Geddes Grant to supply items for school-feeding programme
THE cabinet has awarded T Geddes Grant (Distributors) Limited a contract to supply ingredients for use in school-feeding lunch programme.
Under the contract, T Geddes Grant will provide rice, counter flour, cornmeal, corned beef, tinned Jack Mackerel, skimmed milk (milk powder), vegetable and butter oil at a total cost of $152.5 million.
Making the announcement at Tuesday’s post-cabinet briefing, information minister Donald Buchanan said that the traditional cooked lunch programnme is intended to meet a critical need of providing dietary support to students who are nutritionally at risk.
The programme assists the students by providing the schools with the commodities twice per year. These commodities are used along with other items purchased from a feeding grant provided to each school each term to ensure a supply of cooked meals. Currently, there are approximately 261,000 beneficiaries in basic, primary, all-age and high schools.
Buchanan said that five companies collected tender documents to provide the commodities, but only four submitted bids by the May 18 deadline.
He said that T Geddes Grant (Distributors) Limited submitted a “responsive bid” and the recommendation was made for the company to be awarded the contract.
