Light up the grill!
Think your BBQ sauce is the best? Got the secret to the tenderest ribs? Prove it, at the Jack Daniel’s All-Jamaica Invitational Grill-Off.
Postponed from its original date in September, the competition is back on and now scheduled for Sunday November 18. Taking place at the Caymanas Polo Club, the invitational grill-off calls to all grilling enthusiasts – professionals and amateurs – to put their skills to the test, for the title ‘King of the Grill.’
“It comes from a personal love of mine,” Craig Powell, the push behind the competition tells Thursday Food. “I love grilling and having people over, and after watching the Food Network, I saw all the competitions and wanted to do something like that here, as I am a promoter also,” he says.
The Jamaica leg is inspired by the original competition, the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbecue, which is now in its 19th year, and draws about 250,000 people each year to the small town of Lynchburg, Tennessee. Participants come from across the world, including Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Australia.
While the All-Jamaica invitational is not officially connected to the worldwide championship, Powell hopes that one day it will be, and the winner will represent Jamaica in Tennessee.
Entry fees will be $6,000, per team, which includes all the meats you will need. According to the rules, each team should consist of one head cook and up to four assistants.
Each team must cook a minimum of six whole chickens, 15 lbs of beef (Rib eye roll) and 20 lbs of pork (ribs), and the grand champion will win a trophy and a cash prize (the amount is not yet confirmed). But note: contestants are responsible for all the equipment and supplies, which should include a fire extinguisher.
