New parenting DVD series launched
CONCERNED by the breakdown of family values across the region, Parenting Partners Caribbean Wednesday launched a parenting DVD series aimed at teaching persons proper parenting practices.
“The DVD series which looks at a number of issues and problems affecting families in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean aims to bring across to the population the importance of proper parenting,” said Linda Craigie Brown, a spokeswoman for the group.
Parenting Partners Caribbean, a non-government organisation, was established in the late
1990s as a small task force of professionals with an aim to provide culturally appropriate materials to support parenting education.
The six programmes in the Pelican Point Series are designed to stir parenting discussions around 18 themes, including ‘Parenting: A Serious Responsibility’, ‘Promoting Peace and Developing Positive Relationships with Children’, and the Challenges of Single Parents, the NGO group explained.
Copies of the DVD programmes will be distributed for just under $2,000 to schools and other educational institutions across Jamaica and will also be available to individuals.
Students from several schools, as well as representatives of community and youth organisations across the island attended Wednesday’s launch at
the British High Commission in Kingston.
“Not only am I pleased with this programme, but I do believe it is something that will help to reach out to parents and to teach them about better parenting practices,” said Children’s Advocate Mary Clarke.
Douglas Orane, Patron of Child Month and also chairman and chief executive officer at GraceKennedy Limited, said he was pleased with the programme.
“I believe it will make a great impact and will help to address many of the problems in Jamaica today,” said Orane.
