Campbell smashes long-standing 10K mark
WILLIAMSFIELD, Man-chester — Bellefield’s Kemoy Campbell retained his 10K championship trophy in fine style on Sunday when he smashed the 16 year High Mountain Coffee 10K record by clocking 30:47.
In 1996 Abidi Douza of the USA ran 31:04 and no one has been able to do that time since. As a matter of fact, Douza himself thought no one could run a 30-minute time.
Shawn Pitter of Redemption Track claimed second place in a time of 32:25, while Damion Bent was third
in 33:41.
Five-time 10K runner Edmund Burke of the USA was seventh in 34:30, while his colleague, Matt Forys of Shore Athletic Club, was sixth in a time of 34:25.
Natoya Goule of Manchester High was the favourite going into the race and was victorious in 40:24, followed by Stacey Bell of GC Foster in 42:32 and Shenel McDonald of St Jago High.
The 10K was dominated by athletes from St Jago, who came away with both the male and female overall school trophies.
The 5K event was won by Kirk Brown of Redemption Track Club in a time of 15:31. Kevin White of Holmwood Technical made it in 15:43, with Damion Jones close on his heels with 15:44.
Twishawna Williams of GC Foster took the first-place title with 18:29, followed by Alethia McLaughlin of STETHS in 19:43 and Latoya Richards of Manchester High in 20:14.
The 3.2K Corporate Walk was won by Sharon Edwards of Portmore Athlete Club in times of 24:10. Ricky Purkiss was second in 24:43.
