Blue on top again
EPL: Chelsea has leapfrogged Manchester United to the top of the Premier League after defeating them 2-1 at Old Trafford. Joe Cole put Chelsea ahead in the 19th minute and Drogba doubled the advantage on 78 minutes only for Federico Macheda to pull one back two minutes later. Substitute Nicklas Bendtner headed home a stoppage-time winner as Arsenal overcame a stubborn 10-man Wolves 1-0 at the Emirates.
Tottenham’s attempt to qualify for the Champions League got a setback as they were beaten 3-1 at Sunderland thanks to a brace from Darren Bent. Manchester City broke into Champions League place with a crushing 6-1 victory away at Burnley. City had the game won from the first half when Craig Bellamy, Carlos Tevez, Patrick Vieira and Adebayor got on the score-sheet. Adebayor grabbed his second and City’s fifth while Vincent Kompany headed in their sixth.
Hull City remains deep in trouble after losing 2-0 to Stoke. Following their 7-1 humiliation at the hands of Chelsea, Aston Villa put their Champions League ambitions back on track with a 1-0 away at Bolton. Liverpool’s quest for fourth spot seems to be out of reach as they were only able to draw 1-1 away at Birmingham. The Reds took the lead through talismanic captain Steven Gerrard but the home side earned a share of the soils with a Liam Ridgewell goal. Fulham continued their excellent home form with a 2-1 victory over the inconsistent Wigan.
A win at last
La Liga: Sevilla picked up their first win since February 20th with a 3-0 victory over Tenerife. Fredric Kanoute, Luis Fabiano and Jose Carlos all found the net. Real Zaragoza defeated Malaga 2-0 to gain a valuable three points in their fight for survival in the Spanish Primera.
Barcelona warmed up for their crucial Champions League second leg tie with Arsenal with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao. Bojan Krkic scored twice for the defending champions and Jeffren Suarez and Lionel Messi scored a goal each. Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain ensured that Real Madrid remained leaders of La Liga as they defeated Racing Santander 2-0. Almeria allowed a 4th minute lead to slip as they conceded with only two minutes remaining to end their match with Mallorca 1-1.
Valencia have all but secured third spot with a convincing 3-0 victory over Osasuna to move five points clear of Sevilla in fourth with a game in hand. David Villa scored a brace while Joaquin added a third. Villarreal continued their climb towards Europe with an easy 2-0 win over Valladolid.
Three-goal whipping
Serie A: Juventus’ Champions League hopes suffered further dents as they recorded their 12th loss of the season going down 3-0 to Udinese. Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in the 9th minute and Simone Pepe and Antonio Di Natale netted the others. Catania took another step towards survival with a 2-0 victory over Sicilian rivals Palermo. Inter Milan remained in pole position for a fifth successive title as they eased pass Bologna 3-0. Thiago Motta scored twice and Mario Balotelli got the other. Champions League hopefuls Napoli were held to a 1-1 draw in Rome. Marek Hamsik levelled for the visitors seven minutes before the break after Sergio Floccari had put Lazio in front. Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini were on target as Sampdoria claimed a 2-1 victory over 10-men Chievo. AC Milan are two points back of leaders Inter with a narrow 3-2 win over Cagliari. Marco Borriello and Klaas Jan Huntelaar put Milan ahead only for Cagliari to pull level. However, Davide Astori’s own goal minutes before the break won the game for Milan. Roma will hope the title race has another twist after defeating Bari 1-0 courtesy of a Mirko Vucinic 19th minute strike.
In pole position
Bundesliga: Bayern Munich returned to the top of the table with a battling 10-man 2-1win away at Schalke. Frank Ribery and Thomas Muller scored two quick goals in the first half but Kevin Kuranyi pulled one back. Wolfsburg took Hoffenheim apart in a dazzling 4-0 victory. Edin Dzeko scored twice and Andrea Barzagli and Zvjezdan Misimovic got the others.
Raffael scored twice in the first half as bottom club Hertha Berlin boosted their survival hopes with a vital 3-0 victory over nine-man Cologne. Zdravko Kuzmanovic’s goal with seven minutes remaining continued Stuttgart’s climb up the table with a come from behind 2-1 victory over Borussia M’gladbach. Maik Franz struck a last gasp winner as Eintracht Frankfurt defeated title hopefuls Bayer Leverkusen 3-2. Werder Bremen remained in fifth position despite losing 2-1 away to Borussia Dortmund. Nuernburg outclassed 10-man Mainz in an easy 2-0 win with goals from Mike Frantz and Eric Maxim Choupo-Motinig.
