Can we hear the rain?
1 KINGS 18:41-42,43a-44a: “Then Elijah said to Ahab, go enjoy a good meal, for I hear a mighty rainstorm coming. So Ahab prepared a feast, but Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and fell to the ground and prayed. Then he said to his servant, go and look out towards the sea. Finally, the seventh time, his servant told him, I saw a little cloud the size of a hand rising from the sea.” In the midst of what appears to be dry seasons in our lives it is imperative that we stay focused, listen attentively to what God is saying, shut out all distractors and keep praying.
When God speaks to us by His Spirit it is more real than anything that is happening around us. Elijah heard by his spirit an abundance of rain, which completely contradicted that which was happening on the outside. However, Elijah remained faithful to the voice of God and the manifestation came forth. Today God still speaks to us through gentle persistence, rather than the spectacular and unusual. It is a widespread belief that miracles such as was experienced by Elijah is delegated only to biblical times.
In the book, Delighted in God, Roger Steer wrote about the life of George Muller, a renowned British evangelist who lived in modern times and built an empire of orphanages without soliciting the financial help from any individual. He depended solely on God by unceasing prayer and faith. The Bristol Times describes Muller in the following words: “He was raised up for the purpose of showing that the age of miracles is not past, and rebuking the sceptical tendencies of the time.”
Although miracles are still available to us today, we need to develop a deep and intimate relationship with God. He can then work through us to perform His mighty acts. Can we hear the abundance of rain? Keep praying and listening, it will soon be sight!
Eternal Father, You have spoken to our spirit saying that this nation of ours will repent and return to You. We agree with Your word in Jeremiah 33:9, “Then this city (nation) will bring Me joy, glory and honour before all nations of the earth, the people of the earth will see the good I do for My people and will tremble with awe.” We thank You for the abundance of rain!
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
