ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) — The soon-to-be opened High Performance Centre will not purely address on-the-field matters, a top West Indies Cricket Board official has assured.

Ernest Hilaire, the WICB’s chief executive, said Saturday the institution would provide a forum where players could further enhance their self development as well as their knowledge of West Indies cricket.

“The Sagicor West Indies Cricket Board HPC is not just about the bat and the ball, but about the way the game is to be played,” Hilaire said.

“(It will be about) the way players are to conduct themselves, the history and legacy of West Indies cricket, being ambassadors for the game and the people they represent and preparing the present so we can have a successful future. That is our vision.”

The HPC will be based at the 3Ws Oval at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus in Barbados, and will be headed by former English county pro Toby Radford.

Sponsored by regional insurance giants Sagicor, the centre will welcome its first batch of players on Monday when it officially opens it doors.

The centre’s mandate will be to prepare players for international cricket and Hilaire said this was the first step towards also returning “the West Indies team to the top tier of world cricket.”

“We are fully aware that this goal cannot be achieved overnight. Therefore we are putting the systems in place,” he pointed out.

“We know the formula. Now we have to make it happen and we are confident we have the right people in place to do the job.”
