WFA finalists to be known today
FROME, Westmoreland – The finalists in the Westmoreland Football Association’s Captain’s Bakery Major League will be known today following the return legs of the semi-finals in a double header at the Frome Sports Grounds.
Promoted Extra Flexx is in the driver’s seat against Mt Grace after a hat-trick from Denville McKenzie led them to a 3-2 win on Monday a day after Russia and Paul Island drew 1-1, both games being played at Frome.
Today, Extra Flexx will meet Mt Grace in the first game starting at 4:00 pm followed by Russia and Paul Island and the winners of today’s encounters on aggregate will advance to the two-way play-offs on June 6 and 13, also at Frome.
At stake is a place in the Western Confederation Super League next season along with the $100,000 first prize, while the runner up will get $70,000. Third place gets $40,000, while fourth place gets $20,000.
Russia will be seeking to make it to their third straight Westmoreland FA Major League final after being beaten the last two seasons while Extra Flexx, last season’s Division One champions will hope to make it to back-to-back finals after topping the points tables after the three preliminary rounds.
In the semi-finals on Monday, McKenzie had given Extra Flexx a 2-0 lead before a double from Jessie Meyler brought Mt Grace back level before a late winner from the game’s hero.
McKenzie scored in the 10th and 30th minutes for Extra Flexx, last season’s Division one champions who also topped the point’s tables this season with 39.
Meyler however cut into the deficit just before half-time when he scored in the 43rd minute before getting the equaliser in the 71st minute.
McKenzie scored the winners with five minutes to go when he completed his hat trick in the 85th minute.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Russia and Paul Island played out a 1-1 draw at the same venue.
Derrick Malcolm gave Paul Island the first end of round champions the lead when he scored from outside the area in the 44th minute but Kemar Dawkins extended his league-leading goal tally when he got his 14th in the 83rd minute to leave the teams level going into today’s return leg.
