Paying for damage
Dear Editor,
In these troubled times in which we find ourselves, one cannot help but think that we Jamaicans will pay dearly for the destruction caused by the violence of the past two weeks.
Clearly the gunmen, in their garrisoned constituencies, care very little about destruction. They want to be left alone to run a state within a state as they see best.
The Jamaican Government that unleashed heavily armed military and police to arrest an alleged criminal seemed to have acted without either good preparation or good intelligence. Now as the costs mount, no explanation to the public has been given as to how the Government will find the money to repair the destruction in Tivoli Gardens and other areas.
Jamaicans are already overtaxed, so I suggest that a tax of US$1 be imposed on all tourists for a period of three years to get some money to begin to rebuild the damaged areas.
