Kirk’s Getto Dreem
THERE are many T-shirt lines currently trying to make bold statements with eye-catching graphics and intricate use of colour, but ever so often one comes along that is unique with their approach.
This is true about the line Getto Dreem, which offers T-shirts, shorts and knickers for both the female and male swag. TEENage sat down with Kirk Williams the mastermind behind the very trendy line Getto Dreem.
TEENage: How did the line Getto Dreem come about?
Kirk Williams (KW): While attending Garmex Heart Academy and reaching Level 2, I realised I really had a thing for graphics. I used to just look at pictures on the computer and while talking to a friend the idea to create a clothing line came about. Four of us decided to take it on, and even though I didn’t like the name at first because of the stigma attached, we made it work. I’m basically coming from designing business cards and flyers and from 13 shirts and three designs to this. Romeich was one of my inspirations to really get it done.
TEENage: What is the message behind your designs?
KW: Basically, to create hope and upliftment to the individuals who wear them which comes out strongly from the name.
TEENage: What are some of the different design techniques that you use to create your designs
KW: I draw inspiration from things that are seen in real life and capture it in my designs. I also like to renovate and build designs that I really like to make it better.
TEENage: The T-shirt market is very saturated with different brands, so how would you say that you are different from other lines.
KW: The main problem is that lines promote one design and so become boring after a time. I give my customers variety with different designs and styles so it will always be interesting.
TEENage: Who would you say is your main demographic?
KW: Because of the upliftment message behind the shirts from the smallest child to the oldest person can wear my designs, so I basically target everyone with my designs.
TEENage: Do you plan to do other styles besides shirts and shorts?
KW: Well don’t want to give too much away, but by Christmas we will definitely be aiming more for couture and things like that
TEENage: What is the ultimate goal for your clothing line?
KW: Definitely billboards and overseas distribution.
TEENage: What are the current distribution lines that are available for people to get your shirts?
KW: Well you have Best for Less in Boulevard Shopping Centre, Maxi’s Department Store in Portmore, Things Jamaica at the Norman Manley International Airport and Devon House, Easy Wear in the Transport Centre in Half-Way-Tree and Fontana Pharmacy in Mandeville. to name a few.
