Oil find welcome news
Dear Editor,
I am pleased to hear about the possibility of the existence of a large deposit of oil in Jamaica. According to Sagres Energy, the Canadian company with a licence to explore for oil in Jamaica, there is a strong possibility that up to three billion barrels of crude oil are located offshore in the vicinity of the Pedro Banks.
Certainly, the economic potential of such a verifiable find could not be more welcome, especially in light of our massive oil import bill over the years, which has only served to further depress our ailing economy. Such a discovery, if managed well, could definitely go a long way in helping to seriously recalibrate our economy for the better.
Despite the potential benefits associated with such an oil find, however, it is extremely important that we exercise great caution to thwart any environmental disaster or threat to the marine life of our island. After all, the fishing industry is very important to the economic life of Jamaica.
The government must ensure that the most stringent environmental practices are employed, should a decision be made to drill for oil in Jamaica. Every effort must be made to balance our economic interest against our environmental interest – part of the recipe for sustainable development.
There is absolutely no reason why economic development and environmental stewardship cannot co-exist. The government must lead the way in ensuring this balancing act.
