DPL matches postponed yet again

THE Digicel Premier League (DPL) matches for today have been postponed for the second consecutive match day, due to the inclement weather.

No games were played on Wednesday as heavy rains caused by Tropical Storm Nicole wreaked havoc across the island, killing a number of persons and destroying properties and crops.

The Professional Football Association of Jamaica Ltd (PFAJ), which is a joint venture company that includes members of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA), made the announcement to cancel all games on Friday night in a press release.

“The decision to postpone the games was taken after careful consideration of all the factors by the PFAJ’s, Operations Committee,” the released stated.

“As a result of the inclement weather which dumped thousands of tonnes of water on the island and wreaked havoc on our country, a number of venues across the island were left in a state unsuitable to facilitate games.

“With the conditions forecast to continue, things could only remain the same or get worse, so any decision to schedule games would have been unwise as planning and preparation is important; a last minute advisory could mean incurring expenses that could have been avoided,” said the PFAJ.

In addition to the soggy fields, the weather conditions rendered a number of roads impassable and movement in some areas will be challenging for spectators, officials and representatives of clubs to reach venues.

The JFF’s Under-21 competition which was scheduled for last Friday was also postponed due to the inclement weather.

With the postponements in the DPL, Waterhouse FC and Portmore United will remain at the top of the tables — just ahead of Boys’ Town — on goal difference.

Both Waterhouse and Portmore have 10 points from five games, with identical goal difference of plus four, having scored eight times while conceding four. Boys’ Town are third, also with 10 points, but with a goal difference of plus three.

Last season’s runners-up Tivoli Gardens are fourth with nine points, but have a game in hand against Humble Lion set for October 20.

Five teams are locked on seven points, from fifth-placed Reno to ninth-placed Arnett Gardens.

Village United, with five points, occupy 10th spot, while Humble Lion, with a game in hand, are 11th with one point — the same as cellar team St Georges.

To date, 69 goals have been scored from 58 games with Tivoli, Portmore and Waterhouse scoring the most — eight each.

Humble Lion of Clarendon are struggling in the goalscoring category, finding the net only once. Arnett have also struggled, scoring only four times from five games.

Portland-based St Georges are the most generous, giving up 12 goals from their five games and losing 2-4 to Boys’ Town and 1-4 to Sporting Central.

Portmore’s Steven Morrissey and Sheldon Bryan of Reno lead the goalscoring chart with three goals apiece.
