Riveting matches ahead in St Bess Major League
THE semi-finals of the St Elizabeth/Wray & Nephew Major League contest will get underway this weekend when Appleton tackle Tafari Lions and Super Action face Black River in a repeat of the mid-season final.
Appleton, who finished second in the parish’s top league, will take on the Lacovia-based team at New Town Black River on Saturday, while the high-flying Super Action will play Black River at St Elizabeth Technical School Sports Complex on Sunday. Kick-off time for both games are 3:30 pm.
The top four teams qualified for the semi-finals after completing the 16-game preliminary rounds, which got underway last November.
Super Action, who finished the league atop the standing on 38 points — nine more than their opponents, Black River — with 29 points, will be meeting for the third time this season.
In the first game, the Kurt Brooks-coached team beat Black River, who were being coached at the time by Donald Green, 3-0 at Mountainside.
However, Black River made sure they reached the mid-season final and avenged their 3-0 loss with a 1-0 win to capture the final.
Appleton, on the other hand, beat the Lions 2-1 on their home ground in Lacovia in their first outing on December 21, and drew 1-1 in the return leg on March 13.
After over four months and 16 rounds of hard-fought football, Super Action finished as the most impressive team, winning 12 matches — the most by the 12 teams in the league.
They lost two games, drew two and scored a whopping 47 goals — 10 more than Appleton — with 15 goals against.
Appleton won nine games, drew four and lost three to boast identical figures with Tafari Lions who scored a goal-less (29). They finished the preliminary round on 31 points.
