Cornwall stop ‘Herbert’ for U-14 basketball final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending champions Cornwall College advanced to their fourth straight final in the ISSA/Western Conference Under-14 basketball competition on Friday after beating Herbert Morrison, 41-38, in over-time in their second-round game played at Bogue.
Cornwall avenged their only loss of the season so far, outscoring Herbert Morrison, 7-4, in the extra period after the Montego Bay-based schools had battled to a 34-34 tie after regulation.
With the win, Cornwall moved to seven points, one more than Herbert Morrison, with Muschett next on five points and the champions are assured of a place in the finals.
Herbert Morrison led 11-4 after the first quarter, but Cornwall College hit back to take the second quarter, 14-2, to lead, 18-13, at the half, then went up, 30-19, after the third quarter.
The home team shot back in the fourth with the best offensive output of the game to level the scores and forced the first extra-time of the competition.
Hakeem Grant led Cornwall’s balanced scoring with eight points and five blacked shots; Rashid Davis scored seven points, while three players — Errol Campbell, David Hall and Clayton Mitchell — each scored six points.
David Peck scored a game-high 14 points, along with 11 blocked shots, seven rebounds and eight steals for Herbert Morrison, while Ralique Grant scored 12 points.
Both teams will meet again tomorrow in a third-round game, starting at 2:00 pm, preceding the girls Open finals between Muschett and Herbert Morrison at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
