Young Summerbell looks to rise to occasion
SENNA Summerbell has two very big names to live up to. Anyone with an interest in local motor-racing would know of his father, David Summerbell Jnr, and anyone with a love of Formula One would be familiar with his namesake, Ayrton Senna, the three-time Brazilian former world championship driver who died in a crash at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994.
Summerbell seems destined to follow in his father’s footsteps and has already become involved in go-karting, though that is not his only love.
The nine-year-old is into today’s final of the boys 10 singles at the PanCaribbean Bank All Jamaica Junior Tennis Championships at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre where he will play Ryan McCook.
Not only that, but Summerbell is captain of his Hillel Prep School chess team, and also plays table tennis and football.
Although Senna died almost a decade before he was born, young Summerbell told the Sunday Observer he has spent a lot of time watching the Brazilian in action on the Internet.
“He was my favourite driver. He got a new car the day he crashed,” he said.
“His biggest challenge was (Michael) Schumacher,” he added.
Summerbell, who was also into the semi-finals of the boys 12 singles in this weekend’s tournament. He plays each sport for a different reason.
“I like go-karting because it’s fun and you get to drive fast. I like tennis because… you get to win. My mom wanted me to be a good chess player, so she told me to play. It’s like an army of pieces. There are so many pieces and you get to kill every piece,” he explained.
His opponent in today’s final is the ‘Jamerican’ McCook who Summerbell has had a chance to watch in action.
“He’s a good player. I’m kind of scared because he’s good,” he said.
