Jamaica beat Puerto Rico in U-12 Team Championships
Jamaica’s boys team of Roger Lyn and Dimitri Bird defeated Puerto Rico 2-1 on Monday at the inaugural COTECC (Central America and the Caribbean) 12 and Under Team Championship at the Complejo Polideportivo in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Jamaica, who have been placed in a very strong group alongside Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, had to go on court to play Puerto Rico after having just arrived a couple hours earlier due to travel delays.
At the number one singles position, Lyn unfortunately had to retire at 3-3 in the first set against Ignacio Garcia due to medical reasons. At the number two singles position, Bird came back from a set down to defeat Eduardo Fuertes 4-5, 4-1, 4-2 to equalise the tie at 1-1. In the deciding doubles match, Bird and Lyn defeated Fuertes and Garcia 5-3, 4-2 to clinch the tie for Jamaica.
Other countries in the competition include Nicaragua, Honduras, the Bahamas Suriname, El Salvador, St Lucia and US Virgin Islands
The Jamaicans were to face the Dominican Republic yesterday.
