My Kingston – Benjamin Lee
It’s your first visit to Kingston. What were your impressions of the city?
I found the people at the airport quite friendly. The city is full of character and I love the contrasts of the vegetation. I noticed the colonial-style buildings in downtown Kingston and the shantytowns. But I found people to be just generally laid back.
What has been your favourite meal in Kingston?
I went to Scotchie’s and had festivals with jerked chicken drenched in hot pepper sauce. It was a journey! I also liked the ackee and saltfish I had at breakfast here at the Spanish Court Hotel.
What would you do if you were mayor (of Kingston) for a day?
I would sort out a few potholes in the roads and instigate an open bus tour for visitors to the city.
What’s your advice to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
Jump in a taxi and go have a look at everything.
What is your preferred beverage?
Since I’ve been here, it’s the Dark and Stormy — Appleton V/X rum and ginger beer. Back at home, I drink a lot of sparkling water.
What are your favourite home comforts?
I love my own bed, since I travel around so much, and my Gaggia coffee machine.
What is your middle name?
Beresford.
Share with us the last book you read.
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
What’s your favourite music-themed film or TV show?
I love an old BBC2 television music show called The Old Grey Whistle Test. It features musicians from the ’70s like Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Paul Brady, and even Bob Marley.
What was your last bit of retail therapy?
I bought an Audi A3 two months ago.
What cologne are you splashing?
I am actually using two. Murdock Black Tea and Acqua di Parma.
What annoys you?
People dropping litter.
What makes you smile?
When I see people buskers performing in the streets and they happen to be really good.
What inspired you to become a musician?
My father bought me a guitar when I was four years old and I gave it back to him and asked for a violin because I had seen someone on television with one. I went on to learn classical music on the instrument.
What current projects are you working on?
FUSE is working on a new album and it’s going to be a new sound for us. It should come out next year.
Share some places in your black book.
In Hong Kong, I like to be high up so I go to Mountain View. In Philadephia, I always head out for a Philly cheese steak, and in New York, I like going to the West Way restaurant.
Who would call you at 3:00 am?
Definitely my manager, Will Stoppard.
Are you a fan of Jamaican music and which artists do you like?
I really enjoy Damian Marley and love his Welcome To Jamrock album. I like Sean Paul as well. I live in Brixton in South London so I always hear Caribbean music and grew to love Sly and Robbie and King Tubby.
Finally, what’s your philosophy?
I believe in good karma. What goes around comes around.
