Johnno moves from dance floor to studio
IN recent years, leading dancers such as Ding Dong, Ovamarz and Chi Chi Ching have crossed over into the world of recording.
Add Gowan ‘Johnno’ Whyte to that tally.
The 28-year-old Cedric Titus High School past student says his appreciation for different genres of music influenced his decision to branch out into recording.
“As a dancer who has always attended dancehall sessions my love for music elevated. I have lived in several communites where there is always a sound system playing at its highest volume,” he said in an interview with the Jamaica Observer. “Surrounded by such musical environment it would almost be impossible not to love music.” It was not until late 2010 that Johnno released his first song, Dance Fi Mi Baby. He has followed-up with We No Frighten Easy and Above A Dem All.
Johnno says he became a member of the Ovamarz-led Above A Dem Dance squad in 2009.
“I, along with Ovamarz was a member of Ding Dong’s Ravers Clavers group. However, we separated and some of the dancers remained with Ravers, Ovarmarz and the rest formed the Above A Dem squad,” he disclosed.
Johnno and his crew are best known for the Nuh Behaviour and No Linga moves. The latter was showcased in 2009 on BET’s popular 106 and Park show by superstar sprinter Usain Bolt, using Voicemail’s song, Linga Den Sweep.
He is working on several singles to be released later this year.
