JAMAICA whipped Guatemala, 9-1 (6-0 half-time), yesterday for their first win at the 10th Men’s Junior Pan Am Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Skipper Kemar Mitchell led from the front with four goals, while Leon Waugh and Phillip Dawson added two apiece as Jamaica join Brazil on four points, but still in fourth place on goal difference.

Clive Douglas chipped in with the other goal for the Aubyn Ferguson-coached unit, while Cesar Paiz scored the lone goal for the Guatemalans in the Pool A match.

Mitchell scored in the third, 15th, 18th and 37th, the first from a field goal and the others from penalty corners. Waugh hit the woodwork in the 10th and 22nd, and Dawson was on target in the 29th and 57th.

Douglas scored in the 43rd, with Paiz hitting in the consolation goal a minute later.

Meanwhile, defending champions Argentina (Pool A), Canada (Pool B) and the United States (Pool C) have declared themselves the dominant male teams in the preliminary round, with all three boasting 100 per cent win records.

After seven days of competition, ending Sunday, Argentina’s captain Gonzalo Peillat is the leading scorer with 12 goals, with T&T Andrew Vieira in second position with seven goals.

In the 7th Women’s Junior Pan Am Championships, Jamaica dropped to the bottom of Pool B yesterday when defending champions USA spanked the Demi Nicholson-led Under-21 girls, 8-0 (6-0 half-time).

American captain Emily Wold struck twice, with the other goals coming from Abby Beltrani, Heather Morris, Marta Malmberg, Ali McEvoy, Alyssa Chillano, and Kelsey Harbin.

The Dr Michelle Holt-coached ladies will take on the winner of Brazil v Paraguay on Thursday for the 10th to 11th position.
