PORTMORE United attacker Stephen Williams beamed that it was an “amazing” experience after his wondrous individual goal led the defending champions to a 1-0 win over his former employers Waterhouse FC in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) Monday Night clash at the Ferdie Neita Park.

The strike gave Portmore their first win in what has been a disappointing start to the 2012-13 campaign, while its sheer quality left spectators in awe and delirium.

In minute 28, the former Eltham High School student picked up the ball near the centre circle, rode a series of challenges and shifted the ball away from his preferred left boot before bulging the Waterhouse net with a sumptuous right-footed curler.

“It is so amazing. I have been wanting to score a goal like that but tonight (Monday) against my former team I went out and did it,” the openly elated 21-year-old told the Jamaica Observer after the match as teammates recounted the moment of magic.

Williams, who represented Waterhouse two seasons ago, explained that he was single-minded in his intention when he started on the incisive run.

“From my first touch I was thinking of going straight at the goal. When I picked up the ball across the half-line the first thought was to go at goal,” emphasised the player, who shared that he attended the University of Central Arkansas last year before “difficulties” forced a move back home.

Of his cool finish past a flailing Richard McCallum in goal, he nonchalantly added, “When I cut back the ball I saw that open space and I kicked it there.”

It was certainly the kind of individual genius to encourage fans of Monday Night football and the various stakeholders, including headline sponsors Red Stripe.

According to Portmore coach Andre Waugh, more can be expected from the wily player.

“It was brilliant from Williams… and I have a feeling there is more of that to come,” Waugh said knowingly.
