Williams, Tornadoes star at Martin Classic
SIDRELL Williams of Y Speedos, competing in the Boys 15-16 category, accounted for eight of 18 individual meet records at the three-day Dean Martin Memorial AB Swim Classic which ended at the National Stadium Pool on Sunday, as Tornadoes Swim Club triumphed with 565 points.
The 15-year-old Williams, who shattered the old marks in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley, logged 45 points for Y Speedos, who finished runners-up with 493.
Marlin Swim Club were third with 347, ahead of Swimaz Aquatic 238, Blue Seal 151, Wahoo Swim Club 58, Blue Marlin 36, Royal Swim Club 23, and Dolphin Swim Club, nine.
In the Boys 15-16 50m freestyle, Williams erased the previous record of 26.22 seconds in timing 24.70. He beat Blue Seal’s Antoine Young (26.24) and Y Speedos’ Justin James (27.63).
Williams was even faster than the 17-18 Boys equivalent won by Xavier Boland of Tornadoes in 59.79.
Williams lowered the Boys 15-16 100m freestyle meet mark of 1:01.30 to 55.48 seconds and cut the 200m freestyle old mark of 2:12.73 to 2:05.54.
The Wolmerian demolished the previous 100m butterfly record of 1:09.90 to set a new standard of 1:00.14. Tornadoes’ Kristoff Batson placed second in 1:11.09, with Blue Seal’s Zachary Jardine third in 1:12.54.
In the 200m IM, Young tried to put Williams to the test, but in the end, the latter broke the previous record of 2:38.85 with 2:21.84. Young also went under the old mark to finish second in 2:29.90.
Williams, the new speed king for Y Speedos, also smashed records in the 100m backstroke (1:05.65), 100m breaststroke and the 400m freestyle (4:38.69).
Young, however, had the better of Williams in the 100m breaststroke when he clocked 1:13.84, comfortably below the previous meet record of 1:16.75. Williams posted 1:15.91.
Others featuring in individual meet records were Y Speedos’ Angara Sinclair (Girls 11-12 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly), Blue Seal’s Gabrielle Hopkins (Girls 13-14 200m and 400m individual medley), Marlin’s Ahkira Brown, Tornadoes’ Christian Alberga (Boys 11-12 50m and 100m freestyle) Marlin’s Stefani Webley, and Swimaz’s Emily MacDonald.
Tornadoes’ Annastazia Chin and Joseph Black were other outstanding swimmers at the Dean Martin classic, amassing 36 and 31 points, respectively.
