Scores to get national awards today
SCORES of individuals are down to receive national honours and awards from Governor General Patrick Allen at the annual investiture ceremony at King’s House.
Late folk music pioneer, researcher, performer and educator, Olive Wilhelmina Mahoney Lewin leads the recipients with a posthumous Order of Merit, the country’s third highest honour , for service to the nation.
Additionally, six people are to be awarded the fourth highest honour, the Order of Jamaica (OJ). They are: Kenneth “Kenny” Benjamin, Rev Dr Garnet Brown, Easton Douglas, Hugh Beresford Hammond, Oliver Jones, and Rev Ashley Smith. A seventh individual, Sameer Younis, was conferred with his award at an investiture ceremony last month for his contribution to the retail industry and community development.
Meanwhile, 35 people, including Minister of Health Fenton Ferguson and Opposition spokesman on finance, Audley Shaw, will be awarded the Order of Distinction, Commander Class.
Another 45 individuals will receive Order of Distinction, (Officer Class). They include dancehall deejay Patrick ‘Charlie Chaplin’ Bennett, former boxing champion Richard ‘Shrimpy’ Clarke, broadcaster Simon Crosskill, former member of parliament Harry Douglas, and Reverend Devon Dick.
Meanwhile, 52 awards of the Badge of Honour for Gallantry and Meritorious and Faithful Service will be conferred.
