PAST 1000 GUINEAS WINNERS: THORNBIRD – 1984
The following description of the 1984 1000 Guineas is taken from the official Racing Year publication.
THE season’s first classic, the 1000 Guineas for native-bred three year-old fillies only, highlighted the competitive programme at Caymanas Park on Easter Saturday, April 21, 1984.
A maximum field of 16 classy fillies paraded for the one-mile contest, but the presence of the outstanding Thornbird in the line-up clearly reduced the competitive aspect of the race to little more than a mere formality, and in all fairness with a handicap rating of 284 and her nearest rivals, Timely Bid and Brenda’s Star rated at 218 and 208 respectively, the main interest the contest held surrounded Thornbird’s effectiveness over a distance of ground, as in her two previous starts she showed an abundance of speed, winning devastatingly in track record times giving the impression sprinting could well be her forte.
The 1000 Guineas went just as the majority of fans expected. Trainer Wayne DaCosta’s filly with leading jockey Emelio Rodriquez aboard broke smartly and simply toyed with Little Mary the early leader, and once Rodriquez released his tight hold on her near the half mile, she simply crushed the opposition to win quite easily in yet another record time of 1:37.2 minutes. Finishing second best some seven lengths away was Timely Bid with Brenda’s Star third.
Owned by Fast Lane, the daughter of Tableland – Jules, who is unbeaten to date, looks all set to move from strength to strength.
