MONTEGO BAY, St James — WHILE many celebrated Mother’s Day last Sunday, scores of students turned out at the Herbert Morrison High School in Montego Bay for the third of several islandwide CSEC workshops hosted by the Jamaica Observer in collaboration with Flow.

The participants who attended the workshop came out to sharpen their skills in mathematics and English in seminars conducted by some of Jamaica’s top lecturers, in preparation for their upcoming examinations.

The seminars received high commendation from the students, who saw the free workshop as an opportunity to expand their knowledge in the two subject areas.

Dimario Downer, student at Irwin High and aspiring accountant, was among those happy to have attended the workshop.

“It was a good experience; it really helped me a lot. ‘Fractions’ is an area that I needed some help with, and after participating in this workshop, I now feel more prepared,” said Downer, adding that that he will be using a host of online sites to continue with his preparations for the Maths CSEC exam.

Major sponsors, Flow, have been supporting the islandwide workshops for the past three years.

“We believe that it is important for us to support initiatives like this, as technology in education is a primary focus in our corporate social responsibility portfolio. We have been using our technology to help bridge the digital divide by providing Internet access to thousands of students across Jamaica through our Building Leaders Through Technology Programme; connecting students around the world using video conferencing tools and providing online resources for enhanced teaching and learning,” explained Gail Abrahams, Flow’s Director of Corporate Communications.

Flow has also partnered with the educational website Edufocal.com to provide students with access to the CSEC online learning-aid during the month of May.

Edufocal.com is an online study tool for GSAT and CSEC students that uses ‘gamification’ to engage the students while they practise test material. The site provides immediate feedback and insight into students’ weak areas.

The workshop is free to all students who complete a registration form available in the Jamaica Observer, which should be submitted to any of the branch offices in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios or Mandeville or at the head office on Beechwood Avenue in Kingston. Learning materials and lunch are provided free of cost.

The final workshop is scheduled to take place at Belair High School in Mandeville on Saturday.
