Show goes on for ‘Spartans’
DESPITE the legal challenges of their mentor Tommy Lee Sparta, singjays Stylysh and Destiny Sparta are looking forward to upcoming projects.
Buoyed by recent releases like Gypsy, Welcome and Mi A Wife, Stylysh is scheduled to start a six-week tour of Europe on June 30. It will see her making stops in The Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Denmark, and Norway.
While Lee’s legal battles have no bearing on her career, she says it does have a personal impact.
“It does affect me as I am part of the camp, and what affect him affects us. However, it teaches me to be strong, in that, when my trying times come along I will know how to deal with it as he is doing now,” the 25-year-old told the Jamaica Observer.
Lee was charged on February 14 for breaches of the Anti-Lottery Act. The artiste is on $400,000 bail. Four other individuals were also charged.
Stylysh (Stacie-Ann Lamoth) is one of his protégés. From Kingston, she was a contestant in the 2011 Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall talent contest.
Destiny Sparta (given name Kimberly Cuvilie) continues to record for Lee Sparta’s Guzu Music label. Her latest single, however, is Make We Touch on the Punjabi riddim by UIM Records.
She is also supporting Tommy Lee Sparta.
“I stay positive an’ try my best to motivate him. I know the wonderful person he is and we have been friends before music so we support each other the best way we know how,” she said.
Both artistes are known for raunchy lyrics. This can be heard in Stylysh and Vybz Kartel’s So What and The Real Bad Gyal Medley which also features Tabeta Cshae, Tommy Lee Sparta and Jimbo.
She says she is merely catering to demands of the dancehall market.
“I did a lot of cultural songs that didn’t reach far. After observing the market, I realised that’s what people wanted to hear. Persons have to remember that music is an art, and this is just me taking on a character and playing the role,” she explained.
Born in Montego Bay, Destiny Sparta attended Montego Bay High School and went on to Montego Bay Community College where she did a course in business.
In 2009, she was runner-up in the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall talent contest.
