MAY PEN, Clarendon — Vere Technical and Clarendon College, two former kingpins in schoolboy football, emerged as winners of the Guardian Life-sponsored Clarendon Under-13 and Under-15 football competitions, which were this year staged as one-day rallies.

Vere, nine-time daCosta Cup champions, defeated Glenmuir High 2-0 to win the Under-13 title, but just missed out on the double after losing 2-3 on penalties to long-time rivals Clarendon College in Under-15 edition.

Both schools, who have won 15 daCosta Cup titles between them, have gone off the radar since their dominance in the 1960s, ’70s and ’90s, but are hoping that this crop of youngsters will spark a revival.

Players from Vere Tech and Clarendon College will now form the bulk of the squad that will represent the parish in this summer’s Juici Patties South Central Confederation youth competitions.

Meanwhile, preliminary round action in the Clarendon Division One competition continues today with two games, both set to begin at 3:30 pm.

In Group A, cellar team Little Brazil host New Longsville at Sheckles, while Longville Park play away to Cross United at Cross in Zone B.

In midweek, Group A leaders Harlem were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Black Stars at Glenmuir High, while New Longsville emerged 3-1 winners against neighbours Bucknor.

At Old Paisley, Savannah Cross clipped Group B rivals Emmanuel Strikers 1-0, while Longville Park suffered a 2-0 loss at Moores.
