TUCKER, St James — Sunset Beach Strikers of Montego Bay became the first team to win the Miami Soccer Cup twice after upsetting Ecuadorean side Barcelona All-Stars 1-0 in the second period of sudden death extra time in the final played at WespoW Park on Saturday.

Kamar Forrester’s goal was the difference after the teams had played out a 0-0 draw in regulation time, as Sunset Beach won their second title in three seasons after taking the 2012 edition, also played at WespoW Park.

New Jersey Cougars became the first female champions after earlier beating Saucy Soldiers out of Canada 5-0. Twenty-seven games were played over three days in the seven-a-side tournament contested mostly by airline employees.

It was held in Montego Bay for the third year. Over 100 players, officials and family members travelled from six countries for the event. Twelve games were played on Thursday’s first day and despite heavy rains on Friday, they completed the schedule of 10 games, while another five were played on Saturday.

Despite playing cautiously for most of the men’s final on Saturday, both teams missed good scoring chances with the local-based team being the main offenders as they missed open goals on numerous occasions.

Forrester saved the game from going into penalty kicks after he took advantage of a mistake by the Barcelona goalkeeper and shot into the unprotected goal.

Miami Sunshine took third place after beating a tough NYPD team 5-4 on penalty kicks after they had played out a 1-1 draw in regulation 40 minutes and 20 minutes of extra time.

Sunset had beaten NYPD 2-1 in one semi-final, while Barcelona were 2-0 winners over Miami Sunshine in the other.
