MEMBERS of the Swimaz Aquatic Club were recently surprised with a much needed donation of $150,000 by telecommunications leader, Digicel.

The donation, which will be used to purchase a tent for the swimmers for their meets, was presented during a training session at the National Stadium pool last Thursday.

Speaking to the donation, senior sponsorship manager at Digicel Tahnida Nunes said her company was happy to be adding swimming to the list of sporting discipline it partners with.

“Digicel, since its inception has been a proud supporter of sports, this is evident in our sponsorship of several competitions, teams and also our brand ambassadors. We are pleased to be adding swimming to the suite of activities that we support; we know the donation will go a far way in the continued success of the Swimaz Aquatic Club,” she said.

Club owner and head coach for Swimaz, Lynval Lowe, thanked the cellphone giant for the help.

“As a young club we have to try to be frugal, renting a tent for almost $50,000 each time would therefore not be the best decision, especially as we seek money to further develop our club. This donation from Digicel is truly welcomed and I know our ‘Swimaz’ are very appreciative,” he said.

The Swimaz Aquatic Club was founded in 2009 by former national swimmer, Lowe, with eight members and has since grown to 47 aquatic enthusiasts.

Though small, the team has staked its claim in Jamaican swimming with a steady representation on the national teams.
