PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Government here has thrown its financial support behind next month’s international friendly between Trinidad and Tobago and South American giants Argentina.

The Ministry of Sport has donated TT$420 000 (US$65,000) to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association which will go towards covering camp-related expenses for the June 4 encounter in La Plata.

“The Ministry is happy to continue its support of the national team in this way. Playing against top quality opposition is good for any team and will redound to the benefit of the squad and the individual players,” said Sports Minister Anil Roberts.

“It’s also a fantastic opportunity for the fans to get a taste of the World Cup action, seeing our Warriors and sons of the soil in full flight against favourites Argentina ahead of their participation in the biggest football event in the world.”

For T&T, the fixture will be a high profile one for the Soca Warriors as Argentina boasts the likes of Barcelona star Lionel Messi, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria.

The game is one of two for Trinidad and Tobago within the space of five days as they also clash with Iran in Sao Paulo on June 8, in another friendly international.

Argentina and Iran will use the matches as preparation for the World Cup which kicks off in Brazil on June 12.
