Puerto Rico Ports Authority employees go on strike
DOZENS of employees with Puerto Rico’s Ports Authority went on strike Wednesday to protest fiscal measures aimed at reducing Government spending in the US territory.
Union leaders said the strike affected all departments except the air rescue unit. Workers said they are protesting measures including one that would reorganise the agency and consolidate it with another department, and another that calls for changes to their health insurance.
Victor Suarez, Ports Authority executive director, said there have been no interruptions to public service.
Government employees with other agencies organised a similar protest earlier this month.
The protests come as Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla pushes to reduce spending as the island enters its eighth year in recession and battles a US$73-billion public debt.
