JC footballer collapses, dies
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A Jamaica College (JC) student/footballer collapsed and died this morning in the bleachers of the Sports Complex at the St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) grounds.
A Santa Cruz source informed OBSERVER ONLINE that the youngster was among a group of JC Manning Cup players who was resting in the bleachers after completing a road run minutes earlier.
According to the others, the boy suddenly collapsed, and when he was rushed to a nearby medical complex, he was pronounced dead.
It appears that the boy died of an apparent heart attack at about 8:00 am.
The JC Manning Cup team was at a training camp at STETHS, where it was scheduled to participate in the STETHS Cup, an annual pre-season football competition for high schools.
When contacted, Keith Wellington, principal of STETHS, said:
“Our condolences go out to the family. We are really, really sorry something like this would have happened. As soon as we heard we assigned our guidance counsellors who have been meeting with the JC squad and trying to help them.”
The student/athlete was not identified, and OBSERVER ONLINE was unable to make contact with JC’s principal Ruel Reid, or team manager Ian Forbes.
