Kellier to open $23-m sorrel factory
BETHEL TOWN, Hanover — acting Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Derrick Kellier will today hand over the Bethel Town Sorrel Processing Facility to the Bethel Town Agricultural Cooperative Society at a ceremony in the Westmoreland community, beginning at 2:00 pm.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is expected to deliver the keynote address, while other speakers will include Member of Parliament for the area Luther Buchanan, and Scarlette Gillings, managing director of the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).
The project was funded by the JSIF through its Rural Economic Development Initiative at a cost of $23.22 million. It included construction of processing space and provision of equipment, training and marketing support.
Scores of farmers in Bethel Town and adjoining communities are expected to benefit from the 204 square-metre facility.
