Back to Africa for a ‘King’
TECHNOLOGY has made the modern recording studio super-efficient, but it is still susceptible to devastating glitches.
Singjay King Fragrance found that out four years ago when he recorded the song Africa for producer Kevin Whyte.
“He gave it to me, saying he knew that I was the person with the energy for it, but his computer crashed with all the rhythm files and vocals,” King Fragrance recalled.
Whyte re-recorded the beat in 2013. Recently, King Fragrance added his vocals and Africa was eventually released by Whyte’s Rural Area Production label.
“Under a more vibrant energy, I meditated and rejuvenated the song,” he said.
Originally from Connors district in St Catherine, the 34-year-old King Fragrance (born Donald King) says he has always been drawn to anything with ‘African vibrations’.
He has been recording since 2002 but it was not until five years ago that his first song, Dirty Stepdaddy (with Anthony B and Nickeisha Barnes), was released.
King Fragrance admits that sporadic recording can be frustrating, but his studio output has increased in recent months. His latest single, Black Light, was also produced by Whyte.
