What They Say! – Gary Santos
When did you start your career as a jockey?
From I was a boy, I always wanted to become a jockey as I was coming to the track since I was going to school. My brother-in-law saw the passion I had for the sport and introduced me to trainer Lorenzo Broomfield, after which I was guided by Harry Jaghai and Ernest Hayden until I got my licence in 1983. I was champion apprentice for that year.
Which horse was your first winner?
It took me three months into my profession to ride my first winner. It was out of the five furlongs straight that I guided True Born Captain to victory. I was so excited to get off the mark and I thank trainer Clive Green for giving me the ride.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
Kerry Dancer at 47-1 over a mile for trainer Margret Parchment. I came second but the winner which was Jagsover with Ansel Dancel was disqualified for causing interference to my horse. If I wasn’t hindered I would have won by two clear lengths.
Which is the best horse that you have ridden?
Hello Poochie Lui is the best horse that I have ridden. She was trained by Phillip Feanny, and she was an outstanding horse. The same year I started riding, Hello Poochie Lui won the Oaks and Derby. She was really a good horse.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
I have seen a lot of talented racehorses, on the male side there are Miracle Man, Legal Light but I would give Prince Consort the edge over The Viceroy as Prince Consort is a versatile racehorse, winning his races impressively despite carrying top weight. On the female side it is a toss-up between Hello Poochie Lui and Thornbird.
Who influenced your career the most?
Since I have been in the racing industry everyone has been good to me. Trainers, jockeys, grooms, fans, owners, family and friends have supported me well. I just want to thank everyone for the opportunity and the support they continue to give me.
