Football Sundayz kicks off in Spanish Town today
THE annual Football Sundayz competition among communities in Spanish Town is scheduled to kick off today and ends on December 28.
For the next three months the Coal Yard Oval in the old capital will come alive each Sunday from midday until midnight as there will be the usual after-party.
Promoted by FACEBOYZ Entertainment Limited in partnership with Rum Bar Rum, the competition will see 23 teams shooting to dethrone defending champions Barcelona from the community of Gordon Pen for the cash prize this year which goes up from $50,000 to $80,000 for the champions, and $40,000 for the runners-up.
The competition will feature six matches each week and the first 12 teams to begin vying for the top honours for the 2014 season are Della Coin, representing the community of Waterloo Close, going up against Crystal Palace from neighbouring Rivoli Avenue in the first game.
The other encounters will see Clean Money All-Stars from Belmore Lane taking on Police Youth Club from the St Catherine North Division, to be followed by Bommer Kickers from Ensom City vs Spain from Tawes Meadows, Most Wanted from Red Pond vs Swagg Thursday from Manchester Street, Exceptional Kickers from Martin Street vs Buck Town and French Street taking on defending champions Barcelona from Gordon Pen.
For the past five years this football tournament, founded by Andre Campbell and friends, has served to motivate and unite communities within Spanish Town and its environs with special focus on youth. “As we say, come for the games and stay for the party. This event has had tremendous success in the unification and upliftment of the young people of Spanish Town,” Campbell told the Jamaica Observer.
