What is the best way to apply fertiliser to my orchids? I use a watering can, but I find that the fertiliser finishes quite quickly. Is there a better way for fertilising?

Dear Jordana:

You are wasting the fertiliser this way. Misting from the same spray can that you use for insecticide and fungicide is one of the best ways. Your fertiliser will last much longer, and you’ll save money.  

Dear Orchid Doc:

No matter how much I water the orchids they don’t seem to be getting enough water. They lose leaves just the same, even though I water twice per day for the most part and for long periods. I am wondering if the chlorine in the water is causing the problem.

Have you ever noticed when it rains how beautiful the orchids look after just a few minutes of pure rainfall?

The chlorine in the water alters the pH balance. Whether you are watering or fertilising, if the pH (balance) is not quite correct, the plants are not actually absorbing much.

For want of a better example, it is like having a soda but still being thirsty.

Another reason could be that there is a problem with the roots.
